The rising cost of electricity and global attention to climate change and environmental disasters prompts consumers to consider sustainable energy efficient sources such as solar power for lighting, a significant consumer of energy in and out of buildings. In this workshop, we will start with an introduction to solar lighting market conditions. We will then discuss the technology behind solar panels. There will then be an in-depth discussion on the combination of solar panels and LEDs, and general criteria for evaluating solar LED light sources along with its pros and cons. This workshop will also discuss how solar lighting fulfills LEED and SIT ES requirements. A discussion will follow regarding ideal solar LED applications in construction and architecture.
